On the back panel of this book's dust jacket appears an illustration of a terrified homunculus, sitting on the floor hugging his legs to his body in panic, seemingly imprisoned in the oppressive basement of a long-abandoned building. The drawing is captioned "The Little Guy Who Lives Inside My Brain." This is a good symbolic representation of what's inside the book. This time the focus is on Crumb's baroque, self-absorbed, obsessive mental machinations.If the third volume in this series was about Crumb approaching the pinnacle of his technical drawing skills, this one is about the artist reaching the peak of his expressive abilities. By that I mean this volume is more complicated, varied, and dense, in terms of amount of exploratory idea content and also experimentation with different visual styles and media.Compared to earlier volumes this one is more intellectualized. Here you will find a higher ratio of not-quite-publication-quality ruminative full-page multipanel comic strips. Also different this time is the large number of sketches supplemented with blocks of extended text commenting on, or somehow related to, the drawings. Sometimes the text comments overwhelm the drawings in terms of how much space they take up on the page.It appears that during this period Crumb really did reach the peak of his technical drawing skills: When he draws a portrait or a tree where his goal is to be skilled with a pen, then his technical skills were never better. This is not true however in his experiments with media or visual style. For example, when he incorporates the broad brush into his repertoire, he obviously isn't comfortable using it at first.The format size, paper stock, and printing quality more than do justice to these sketches. I wish the affordable edition of Crumb's _Sex Obsessions_ book had been formatted in this size rather than the somewhat smaller lower-budget one it was published in.
