First of all, the reader does not know that any of the words from start to finish are actually through the eyes of this killer, because: #1 - he gave no interviews - ever. #2 - he killed his entire family, so the words didn't come from them. #3 - the childrens teachers never noticed anything unusual about the seven children or so the author states. #4 - no one was allowed to come into their home or on the property, so no one actually witnessed their lifestyle whether abusive or not! And, the author does not tell us how he came upon all the information in this story. The introduction is not a usual introduction in that it should have been chapter 1, not the intro. There was no introduction of this material to the reader. The only conclusion is that its entirety is a work of fiction!
The author presents a study of a psychopathic killer that decimated his family, co-workers, obsessions with employers and a young girl he fancied. I wish there were more dates involved as it would have been a greater insight into the times and attitudes of people. Author was concise and chilling in capturing the gory details!
How a man much less a father could murder his entire family and in the manner he went about it is unfathomable. To have those poor children watch the horror he inflicted on their parents and to drown them in the freezing cold water is horrific. All because Shelia decided to live her life differently than Gene had in mind by molesting his child for years and warping her sense of what is right and wrong. Incest took over her better judgment. And the fact he killed people he just happened to work with is the new statement with these sort of loose canons and psychotic behavior. My reason for two stars is i didn't like the wording style of the book and I think it lacked details into his everyday actions with his family and co-workers that would have made it more interesting and given more insight to Gene Simmons. I felt left wanting more details.
I knew this story from reading Zero at the Bone, but this book came from an entirely different perspective and it read like a novel.Every person who tries to explain motive comes up with something different. Perhaps we will never understand the mind and motive of Ronald Gene Simmons. It's plain to see he had a plan and executed it like a military mission.Simmons was not a crazed killer running around killing anyone who stuck their head up. He had specific targets, then he was finished. There's no doubt he knew what he was doing.25
Grisly account of the single largest mass murder of a family in Arkansas told similar to eye-witness fashion with plenty of detail which made it a better book for it. Was sick to think of how he lead the children outdoors in single fashion under the guise of mom having a 'special surprise' in store come Christmas day before brutally murdering them and throwing their corpses in a mass grave. Made me upset for the family and can't help but leave me with the thoughts, "Hope you burn in hell, Ronald Gene Simmons!" This author can truly weave a story about serial killers that hits hard.
A very thin book. The author doesn't seem to have done any in-depth research and offers only superficial explanations and guesses about why this crime occurred. Large periods of time are glossed over, and the only real detail provided is the basic facts of the crime: who died first, how they died, and what he did with the bodies. This is more of a long magazine article than a book - at only 124 pages on a Kindle, I finished it in an hour and had to find something else to do with the rest of my evening. Disappointing.
This was a truly frightening expose about what the thinking process is when men (or women) destroy their (so called) loved ones when they lose control of a relationship. Although this story takes it to the extreme, no matter whether the so called loved one is a man or a woman, the terrifying aftermath can be complete destruction. I'm not sure how Ryan Green was able to inhabit the mind of the destroyer so well, but there isn't a false note in his story. It must have been a long, tremendously stressful life to have been married to, and be a child of, the destroyer. A truly evil act of rage and revenge.
Obeying Evil is the best true crime novel I've read in a long time. Rather than just dates and facts about the Mockingbird Hill massacre, Ryan Green tells the tale in the form of a story seen through the eyes of a killer. Mr Green makes the victims seem like people we might have known, who had thoughts and dreams that differed from the degradation they were forced to endure. What happened to this family was horrendous, but thanks to Ryan Green, their story is well told.
