From School Library Journal

PreS-K—Taylor is overcome with sadness when an impressive block construction crashes to the ground, and none of his animal friends' suggestions help. Each creature proposes an outlet: Chicken wants to talk about it, Bear surmises that Taylor is angry and offers to "shout about it," Hyena suggests laughing, and so on. Taylor doesn't feel like doing any of those things and remains in a funk. But when Rabbit cuddles in close and listens, the child finally lets loose. With sadness finally dispelled, Taylor can now envision beginning again to build something "amazing." The cartoon illustrations, digitally rendered with thick black outlines, depict a curly-haired moppet in striped pajamas. The animals appear in several vignettes as they submit their ideas. Taylor builds with rapt concentration, proudly admires the work, gasps in horror at its destruction, and curls up in sadness before expressing bottled up feelings. The only background color is the deep purple against which a flock of black birds swoops down and scatters the blocks and the background against Taylor's real and imagined structures. VERDICT In addition to validating feelings of anger and disappointment, this book is a fine vehicle for group discussion of ways to help others deal with these emotions. Sometimes just listening is best of all.—Marianne Saccardi, Children's Literature Consultant, Cambridge, MA

This book is both simple and profound. All three of my kids (7, 6 & 4) immediately -& verbally- identified with the emotions and reactions. I did too! (apparently I’m the hyena, btw 😬...)The message of loss can be interpreted at any depth. I honestly have an adult in mind to buy this for. It’s beautiful, sincere, and perfectly done.

Buy this book immediately. I don't care how old you are. This is the best book I've read in years. It demonstrates so much using simple, straightforward language and evocative illustrations. I have recommended it to everyone from the elementary school librarian to my friend who is a marriage therapist. As an English teacher, I could design a curriculum around this book. My husband cried when he read it. It's about being the kind of friend everyone needs. It's about the stages of grief. It's about hope and synergy and steadfast listening. It's time. Buy now with 1-click and thank me later.

This story really touched me. Sometimes as adults, teachers forget that what seems little to us, is a big deal to a child. As Taylor grieves over the loss of his tower, the animals all come and tell him what to do to make things better. Something that as adults we have a tendency to do. When Taylor doesn't respond to any of the animals, they leave. Until the rabbit shows up and just sits quietly next to him. Eventually, Taylor reaches out to the rabbit and does all the things the other animals suggested to him. The rabbit listens quietly until Taylor reaches the point where he is ready to rebuild his tower. I plan to use this book with my kindergartners when I talk to them about listening and the value of empathy. It's also a powerful reminder to me to be empathetic myself. An adorable book with a powerful lesson.

As a Psychologist who works with childen, and a parent, I highly recommend this story! It offers a wonderful, relatable story to kiddos, as well as a chance to notice and label the characters' feelings. It is also a gentle reminder that when things are tough, what we all need is someone to be with us to give us space to feel and open up in our own time. Lovely! The illustrations are charming, too.

Love this! Its subject is marked as "death & dying" but it is also fantastic for just learning about emotions when dealing with any situation - sibling arguments, not getting what you want, etc. The different animals represent different emotions, so easy for kids to say "I feel like being a bear right now" or "I need a rabbit to listen to me right now."

Where to start with this perfect picture book that I am certain will become a staple of children's literature? It is a simple, beautiful fable we can all relate to (one little detail that I love is that the author keeps Taylor completely gender-neutral- Taylor is a character who stands for all of us!) about how we process loss and disappointment. The different animals suggest different ways to solve Taylor's problem, to no avail- until the rabbit just sits with Taylor and listens. I think this book is not only a good read for children who are themselves undergoing a loss (it seems to frequently be recommended as a book to address death and dying) but it's also a great, easy lesson in how to be a good friend to others. The simplicity of the narrative and illustrations belies a deep, thoughtful emotional complexity. My two year old loves this book. So do her grandparents. This one should be on every shelf.

I believe that everyone needs a copy of this book. The message is simple and brilliant. It reminds you to pause.Taylor builds a block tower that he is proud of only to have it knocked down. Starting with the chicken, who just wants Taylor to talk it out, animals approach Taylor with strategies for dealing with the accident. But, none of them are quite right until the Rabbit approaches him and let’s him go through the emotions at his own speed.A must have books.

A great story that shows sometimes children just need someone to be present and listen to them when they are upset. There aren't too many words on each page either, so it's great for younger kids. My 2 year old enjoys it.
